What is an Automotive Technician?

Automotive technicians work in mechanic shops, car dealership service departments and other types of shops. They examine a car’s condition and advise the driver of possible problems. Most automotive technicians repair the basic parts of cars like brakes and steering wheels. They are also able to inspect and repair a vehicle’s electric system. They are required to perform daily automotive maintenance tasks, such as checking fluid levels, changing oil fluids, and rotating tires. They must clean and organize the shop.

While some Automotive Technicians are experts in a specific system, others can repair all types of vehicles. An Automotive Technician must have a good understanding of the operation of automotive engines.

Qualifications and skills for Automotive Technicians

  • An Automotive Technician who is successful will have many skills and qualifications.
  • Possession or ability to get training credentials such as an ASE certification
  • Communication skills that are both verbal and written are essential

Analytical skills

  • Use power and hand tools to repair and replace parts
  • Coordinating and [hysical endurance]

Training and education requirements for automotive technicians

The needs of each shop determine the requirements for automotive technician education and training. A high school diploma, GED or ASE certification are the most common requirements. It is important to have a good understanding and ability to use diagnostic equipment. You should also be willing to learn and renew your certifications.

Automotive Technician experience requirements

There are many factors that influence the experience required for an Automotive Technician. These include the changing needs of the shop. Candidates with extensive training in many skill areas and flexibility are desirable. All Automotive Technicians must have basic knowledge of routine auto maintenance tasks. Experience in front-end alignments, tire rotations, and other maintenance tasks is also an asset. It is helpful to have a working knowledge of the state inspection guidelines, including safety and emissions.
